Poetry In Wood is an art, design and woodwork project providing accredited training and supported employment for
people with learning disabilities.
Poetry In Wood is a person centred creative environment for people with learning disabilities; that is kind and positive and values each person and their abilities. We promote independence and empowerment through training and employment and help people to contribute to, and participate in the wider community.
The Poetry In Wood Training team run an NVQ course accredited by The Open College Network. This is called Product Design & Development and the skills gained include the use of woodworking tools, pyrography, machine working and workshop safety. Each unit passed is awarded a certificate and towards the end of the course the students are given work experience in our social enterprise.
On completing the course, the graduates have a chance to work in Poetry in Wood’s social enterprise where they work on commissions from the public and statutory bodies. The broad skill base gained with the Product Design Training team makes it possible for those who successfully pass, and join the Enterprise Team, to tackle large and small commissions. The team can produce anything from bookends to whole room or building makeovers.
Our Social Enterprise is a supported employment scheme for people with learning disabilities who are graduates of our Product Design course. Apart from commissions they also produce paintings and products for sale. The project is user led; the workers participating in every aspect of the service.
Our training and employment teams are made up of people with learning disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, epilepsy, Asperges, on the autistic spectrum, and some physical disabilities.
They are aged 19 to 74, male and female, English, Korean, Bangladeshi, Chinese and Afro Caribbean.
