About Us

At Poetry in Wood, we are dedicated to providing a person-centered, creative environment for individuals with learning disabilities.
Our ethos is rooted in kindness, positivity, and a deep appreciation for each individual's unique abilities and talents.

Through our emphasis on teamwork and the acquisition of new skills, we strive to promote independence and empowerment among our community members. We believe that by fostering an environment of collaboration and learning, we can facilitate their valuable contribution to the wider community.

Our organisation is based in Spitalfields, East London, and we are proud to serve a diverse community of 35 members with learning disabilities. These individuals attend our Training Workshop or Design Studio, where they receive personalized support and guidance.

In December 2021, we transitioned from a social enterprise to a Charitable Incorporated Organization (CIO), and we are pleased to share that our charity number is 1192814. We are honored to be able to continue our mission of supporting individuals with learning disabilities, and we look forward to the continued growth and success of our community.

Our Aims / Mission / Values

Our mission at Poetry in Wood is to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters independence and empowerment for adults with learning disabilities. We achieve this by teaching a range of art, design, and woodwork skills that promote creativity and self-expression. Our community values each individual's unique abilities, and we strive to instill a sense of pride and purpose in our members. By providing opportunities for our members to contribute and participate in the wider community, we aim to promote greater social inclusion and a more equitable society.

SKILLS WORKSHOP/ PRODUCT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

At Poetry in Wood, our Training Room serves as a space for individuals to explore their own creativity and develop the technical and creative skills necessary to express themselves. Our workshops provide members and students with a range of tools and techniques that enable them to bring their ideas to life.

Throughout the course of our sessions, we facilitate a variety of group projects that promote collaboration and teamwork, enabling individuals to work together towards a common goal. This not only helps our members and students to develop their technical and creative skills, but also fosters a sense of community and shared achievement.

The outcomes of our workshops are nothing short of fascinating - a testament to the spirit of experimentation and innovation that is at the heart of everything we do. From working ukuleles to inlaid boxes, puppets to film scenery and picture frames, the creativity and craftsmanship of our students is truly awe-inspiring.

We are pleased to offer regular exhibitions, showcasing the incredible work produced by our members and students.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a student, we invite you to contact Jackie, our manager, to arrange a tour and series of taster days.
Please email office@poetryinwood.org.uk for more information.
Additionally, we welcome visitors to come admire and potentially purchase our creations at our market stall in Spitalfields every Wednesday.

Design Studio

Students who complete the training course can join our Design Studio. We make unique gifts, large scale murals and signage.
Upon successful completion of our training course, students are given the opportunity to join our esteemed Design Studio, where they specialise in crafting unique gifts, large-scale murals, and signage. We invite you to peruse our website to view stunning examples of our team's work.

For those interested in acquiring a custom piece, we welcome you to visit our workshop, where you can explore the various works on display and discuss your ideas with our skilled team. To initiate the process, kindly reach out to us via email at studio@poetryinwood.org.uk, and we will be delighted to assist you.

Our Design Studio is composed of a talented team that has earned their way through our rigorous Training Studio. They possess the skills and confidence to accept commissions from diverse businesses and organisations for the creation of murals and signage, as showcased on our Projects & People page. Collaborating with our staff, our team works cohesively to design and execute each commission to perfection, while also pursuing their own personal projects and developing handcrafted items for our weekly market stall at Old Spitalfields Market, held every Wednesday. Look out for our bespoke signage on many of the stall holders displays.

We are proud of our team's hard work and dedication, and we look forward to the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece for you or your organisation.
